Soprano, violin, cello, piano (2005 )
Premiered by soprano Kara Morgan with Great Noise Ensemble on January 29, 2006 in Washington, D.C.
Silly Ditties, a cycle of songs for children, is not meant so much for children to perform but, rather, for children (of all ages, of course!) to enjoy. The texts are often surreal, ridiculous and funny and are full of the boysterousness of young children. The pieces were composed over an interrupted four-year period. The first three pieces were composed in Ann Arbor, Michigan for the soprano Jennifer Goltz but I was never satisfied with the notion of the entire cycle consisting only of those three pieces and, so, Silly Ditties sat incomplete for four years until I wrote the last three poems of the cycle during the late summer and early fall of 2005.
The texts and music are relatively straightforward and I will let the pieces speak for themselves but I believe a note on the interlude is necessary. It began life as the second of my Two Little Romances for oboe and piano and is inspired by my daughter’s stuffed animal games. These games, often quite involved and lengthy affairs, are surprisingly rigid in their role play and any deviation from the prescribed roles is met with concern and immediate correction. They are, I must admit, a lot of fun to take part in as they are full of mirth and joy. The interlude (along with all of Silly Ditties, certainly), which takes its melodic material from the letters in my daughter Olivia’s name, is meant to capture, however slightly, this sense of amusement and joy that children, especially one’s own, can bring.
